Art Histories

Buzzing pregnant women

Three graces

Song, dance and power.

In “Art Histories”, I paint women in different ancient styles doing things that they wouldn’t have done in the classic representations of the time. In my paintings, women sing, dance, shout and laugh. The opposite of the silent feminine figure that fills the history of art that I studied.

The series was inspired by the book Women and Power, by Mary Beard. Particularly, by the idea that women are still silenced in contemporary culture using methods and arguments from antiquity.

In painting these misbehaving women I ask myself the question: how would the world look now if all this time women had been allowed to be themselves?
