Matter of priorities

Anger as the beginning of change.

Perhaps because it is a force for social transformation, anger is often dismissed as an unfeminine emotion.

But many women are angry.

“Matter of Priorities” is a series of paintings about anger—raw, justified, transformative.

The texts accompanying the paintings highlight possible reasons for this anger—women’s subordinate position in society, the use of intimidation to suppress liberation, and the exclusion of women from power.

To paint anger is to make it visible, undeniable.

When I started this series, I was curious about the challenge of painting emotions and their effect on the body. This led to the desire to fill a wall with paintings of angry women.

What would it do to a space? And to the viewer?
