Digital illustration of the black silhouette of a woman working at a desk, with blue legs. The image, of simple lines, is framed in an elaborate golden oval frame.

Blue Stockings

In England, in the 18th century, there was a group of intellectual women who were called “The Blue Stocking Society.” At that time, a woman who wished to (and could) educate herself often did so in secret, as it was frowned upon for women to study.

With this illustration I accompany fragments of Jane Stevenson’s book, (Women Latin Poets: Language, Gender and Authority from Antiquity to the Eighteenth Century), which she allowed me to reproduce in my project xyx28: the encrypted feminist magazine.
